about

Spirit Spout is the title of a chapter from Herman Melville's Moby Dick and refers to the crew of the Pequod, becalmed off the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, observing the spouting whale in the far distance but unable to locate it precisely. They lower their boats into the nocturnal waters, but their quarry eludes them. It captures something of the essence of improvisation, its intersections with the world of formal composition, and the mystery of influence. In the world of Spirit Spout, new composition, jazz, ambient and electronic music are all present but remain resistant to categorization.
